Dear Mr Sellars,
I am writing to enquire if you would be able to take me for a weeks work experience as part of my transition year course. I am currently a Transition Year student at Portumna Community School. As part of our Transition Year programme we will complete two weeks of work experience the first one in October from the 23rd to the 27th and the second one in February.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to complete my work placement in your plumbing business because I want to pursue a career like this. I like keeping myself busy all the time. My dad is a builder so I have an interest something this. I work with him as much as I can every weekend and holidays so I am hard worker. I also go to the bog every summer and foot turf for people with my cousin so I can earn money for myself.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to view my application. I hope that you will consider offering me of an interview.
I look forward to hearing you.
Yours sincerely,
Kieran Martin.
Diary of Work Experience:
Day: One
Date: 23rd October
Start time: 6:30am
Finish time: 10:30pm
Training and instructions: At the start of the day I was told what we were doing. I was told that we would be rolling out pipes for the bathrooms and for the system they were putting in. They explained to me how to role the pipe out properly and in a straight line. He told me how to screw it to the ground. He told me I needed to have ear muffs for the next day as there was a lot of noise being made around. He said we would be hear for week as there was a lot of work to be done as it was only first fixing.
Work undertaken: The jobs I had to do were roll out pipe and screw it to the ground. I had to sweep the floor before I rolled them out as it would damage the pipes. I rolled out the pipes and them down with screws and galvaband. I then had to screw clips to the wall so the pipes could be turned up the wall.
Interactions with others: I interacted well with the other man that works with the plumber. Myself and the plumber interacted well together because if I didn’t know how to do something he would show and help me to do it properly. I also met the person that owned the house and we talked for a while he asked were I was from and what school I went to etc. He told me to stay in school and get a education as this kind of work was hard and long hours.
Problems/challenges I faced and how I overcame them: At the start of the day I didn’t really know how to do anything but then he showed me how to do it and I got the hang of it.
Skills that I improved in: I improved in my self confidence in talking to people. I improved in getting up early.
New skills that I developed: I developed a lot of new skills I learned how to roll out pipe. I learned that they don’t use as much copper any more as it has gone very weak and they don’t want joints underground any more.
How others valued my opinion: The person that the plumber works with thought I was a good worker and I was a good lad to get up early in the morning.
My personal evaluation of today: I thought that the day went well because I did everything I was asked to do and I did it well. I got up on time so I wasn’t late to leave. I thought I did everything right and to the best of my capability. I learned that plumbing has very long hours in the job and is very tiring.
Day: Two
Date: 24th of October
Start time: 6:30am
